Ready, Set, Shop. Black Friday Approaching.

Some retailers are getting an early start on their holiday promotions, but Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, is when many stores offer special deals to attract shoppers.

New Jersey Retail Merchants Association president John Holub says even with the ease of shopping online, the allure of Black Friday is not fading.

"Not for a sizeable portion of the population. I mean I talk to a lot of folks that it's an annual tradition. They celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday with the family and get up bright and early and are first in line for certain stores on Friday. It's almost a competition for some people to try to get out there and get the best deals possible."

Holubs says  this weekend sets the tone for the holiday shopping season that accounts for 20 to 40 percent of yearly sales for many retailers.

“Black Friday is the biggest day of the weekend, but Saturday has become very popular with heavy promotion of Small Business Saturday. And of course we still have Cyber Monday  as well and something that over the past few years, shopping online, obviously is becoming increasingly popular.”

Holub says the Black Friday markdowns will be the best deal some stores will offer for the entire holiday season.
