Nubya Garcia Mixes Jazz with London's Soundsystem Culture, on The Checkout

Adama Jollah
Nubya Garcia

One of the artists who left a mark at this year's Winter Jazzfest was newcomer Nubya Garcia. Get to know the firebrand saxophonist from the United Kingdom in another edition of My Music, on The Checkout.

Garcia just released a new EP, When We Are. On this Checkout podcast, we'll hear the title track from this recording, and get to know the artist who fuses London's booming soundsystem culture — dub-step, grime, hip-hop, and electronica — with modern forms of jazz.

This blend of modern sounds from the United Kingdom is also well encapsulated on We Out Here, the latest compilation curated by Gilles Peterson from Brownswood. The album features Garcia’s passionate playing with many of her London peers, notably Shabaka Hutchings, Joe Armon-Jones, Moses Boyd and Theon Cross.
