This Memorial Day is also the centennial of President John F. Kennedy's birth. Honoring the President's legacy, WBGO reporter Naomi Brauner speaks with the photographer who took the image of President Kennedy that recently became a Forever stamp by the United States Postal Service.
Ted Spiegal took the photograph of President Kennedy in Seattle, Washington, during the first week of his presidential campaign.
To Spiegal, the photograph portrays Kennedy as the thoughtful politician he was.
"He was in a sight called victory square, and the entire city was an open window, looking down at him, and he was about to make a speech. My sense of the matter as I was taking the photograph, was that he was subsuming, gathering into himself, this tremendous outpouring of support that you could sense there in Victory Square."
Spiegal says that on this Memorial Day, we should remember the emphasis on personal responsibility the President Kennedy left us with.
"We have the opportunity on Memorial Day to utilize our memory, not for the tragedy, but for the endowment that he offered the nation."
Kennedy's legacy, to Spiegal, is one of civic duty and strong leadership.
