Under the direction of trombone masters Ed Neumeister and Conrad Herwig, the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights Trombone Ensemble was named winner of the 2018 Winding Awards at the Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition, organized by the International Trombone Association.
The ensemble features trombonists Greg DeAngelis, Pablo Hernandez, Dave Mosko, Ian Young and Nathan Morla. Its rhythm section has Luciano Minetti on piano, Jonathan Kirschner on guitar, Zachary Heinze on bass and Zach Lorelli on drums.
As part of our Jazz Appreciation Month series at WBGO, the Scarlet Knights performed Joe Henderson’s "The Kicker," featuring DeAngelis, Hernandez, Mosko and Minetti; and "Duke Ellington’s Sound of Love," composed by Charles Mingus, with solos by DeAngelis and Hernandez. "Passacaglia," an original composition by band director Ed Neumeister, was also added to the ensemble's repertoire, featuring solos by Mosko and Heinze.
