Janis Siegel Brings Her Elegant Sound to a Live Performance on Singers Unlimited

NYU Village Voices

NYU Village Voices

Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer is one of the most versatile singers in jazz and song. She can sing (always delightfully) vocalese, standards, gospel, doo-wop, a kaleidoscope of “pop” songs, bossa novas, and then some. Requinte Trio is a new group she’s been working with recently, featuring pianist John DiMartino and guitarist and vocalist Nanny Asiss. ("Requinte" is Portuguese for refinement or elegance.) Their newest album is Honey & Air, and they’ll sing those songs and much more this Friday evening, April 21st in the new “Jazz on Bleecker Street” series at the Sheen Center in Manhattan. They’ll be joined by trumpeter Randy Brecker.

Michael Bourne, who died on August 21, 2022, was a presence on the air at WBGO between the end of 1984 and the start of 2022 when he retired from full-time hosting duty. He is the host of the Singers Unlimited Podcast by WBGO Studios. Previously, he hosted the popular Singers Unlimited (1985-2022). He also hosted the equally popular Blues Break for several years. Michael is a senior contributor to Down Beat, with the magazine since 1969. Doctor Bourne earned a PhD in Theatre from Indiana University -- which comes in handy when he's a theatre critic for the WBGO Journal.
