Hear Guitarist Mary Halvorson on The Checkout

Before Mary Halvorson became the critic's choice for jazz guitar, she was excelling as a biology student at Wesleyan University, until she met one formidable professor.

After meeting NEA Jazz Master Anthony Braxton, her hobby of playing guitar became a lifelong obsession. On this Checkout podcast, she reveals an important lesson bestowed to her by the experimental composer, and shares music from her recent octet and solo recordings.

Halvorson joins trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire at National Sawdust on Wednesday, Aug. 30.
