Hear Guitarist Kevin Eubanks, in Conversation and Solo Performance, on Morning Jazz

Kevin Eubanks has been a head-turning jazz guitarist since his debut album, Guitarist, almost 35 years ago. His new release, East West Time Line, is the latest in a series of self-assured statements since he walked away from his job as leader of the Tonight Show Band, in 2010.

The album features two high-test ensembles, and Eubanks appeared with one of them — featuring bassist Dave Holland, trumpeter Nicholas Payton and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts — at Birdland last month.

While he was in town, Eubanks stopped by Morning Jazz to chat with Gary Walker, guitar in hand. Among the songs he performed were the standards "My One and Only Love" and "Summertime"; a couple of original compositions, "Adoration" and "Time Line"; and an improvisation he titled "Joyful."

Corey fell in love with jazz by the time he got to track 2 on his first listen of Miles Ahead. He engineers WBGO’s live in-studio performances and off site events, produces on-air spots and long form programming, and coordinates the daily log of promotional and underwriting announcements. His audio production, writing, and voice-over work have earned two New Jersey Broadcasters Association awards. Corey is a graduate of Rutgers University’s Jazz History and Research M.A. program.
In jazz radio, great announcers are distinguished by their ability to convey the spontaneity and passion of the music. Gary Walker is such an announcer, and his enthusiasm for this music greets WBGO listeners every morning. This winner of the 1996 Gavin Magazine Jazz Radio Personality of the Year award has hosted the morning show each weekday from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. And, by his own admission, he's truly having a great time.
