"Taking the Mystery Out of Medicine"
It's information that could change.or save a life. With increasingly confusing health headlines, lots of new drugs and a resurgence of herbal remedies and dietary supplements, who's keeping track of possible side effects and interactions? Listeners find answers on The People's Pharmacy. Joe and Terry Graedon bring unique backgrounds to the health news that matters to you.
In 2003 the Graedons celebrated their 25th anniversary on radio and in national newspaper syndication (King Features Syndicate.the same syndicator that brings you Click and Clack in print).
It all started with an NPR interview on the best-selling book The People's Pharmacy in 1977. That was when pharmacologist Joe Graedon was invited to do commentaries for NPR, based out of WUNC in Chapel Hill, NC. That lasted until Joe and his anthropologist wife left for San Francisco in 1982, where Terry did a post-doctoral fellowship in medical anthropology at the University of California, San Francisco.
When Joe and Terry returned to Chapel Hill, NC, they started the weekly health talk show, The People's Pharmacy, on WUNC. As a pharmacologist, Joe has a special interest in medications and interactions. Terry's background in nutrition and anthropology enable her to focus on how people understand health and illness and what they do about it. Expert guests include leading researchers from around the country. In 1992 The People's Pharmacy won the Silver Award for Public Affairs from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
In 1994 the show was syndicated nationally. It is heard on more than 100 public radio stations and the In Touch Radio Reading Service as well as Armed Forces Radio. The Graedons cover cutting-edge medical topics with the country's leading researchers. If you want to know the latest on heart disease, diabetes breakthroughs, or the scandals surrounding antidepressant medications, you can rely on the Graedons to present objective, up-to-the-minute information.
Joe and Terry received the prestigious Alvarez Award from the American Medical Writers Association for "excellence in medical communication" on September 19th 2003.
