The Bob Brookmeyer New Art Orchestra, a German big band devoted to the American composer, follows Empirical from the UK, winner of the European Broadcasting Union best youth band competition.

- Clayton Brothers at 2008 University of Michigan Jazz Festival
After the Los Angeles bassist John and saxophonist Jeff Clayton spend the day coaching eager students in snowy Ann Arbor, their quintet premieres arrangements of music inspired by other brothers in jazz.

- John Patitucci at Kennedy Center Jazz Club
There's an array of basses, guitars and drums onstage for John Patitucci, Larry Koonse and Brian Blade. An array of music as well, by Sonny Rollins, Thelonious Monk and Frederic Mompou (1893-1987) of Barcelona. "Jesus is on the Mainline" is the closer.

- Trio da Paz + Kenny Barron at Jazz Standard in New York
In March 2008, New York magazine named Jazz Standard the Best Jazz Club in the annual Best of New York awards. For two consecutive weeks, we will hear why. First, the Brazilian trio with guitarist Romero Lubambo shares a set with jazz pianist Kenny Barron.

- Jonathan Batiste Quartet at Jazz Standard
The young pianist from New Orleans moved to New York to study at Juilliard. His hometown keyboard style in tact, Jonathan's' theme is a Crescent City style on "The Entertainer" by Scott Joplin, and more, in this March 08 set.

- Preservation Hall Jazz Band Opens the JVC Jazz Festival Big River Concert Celebrates New Orleans in Chicago
New Orleans' traditional jazz band blends old and young music that's serious and jubilant at a picnic in New York. Then Don Vappie -- banjo picker, singer and purveyor of Creole culture -- joins Ellis Marsalis, Nicholas Payton, Victor Goines and more to raise spirits and funds after Hurricane Katrina, at Chicago Symphony Center.

- Double bill: Joe Lovano and Mike Stern, Outdoors at the J&R Music Festival in New York
In this 2006 set, "burly dude" Joe Lovano (thanks to a GQ reviewer for that apt description) welcomes summer with his tenor sax. We will miss the late Dennis Irwin, Joe's long-time bassist. Following Joe and Dennis, Mike Stern's guitar band further stirs the air in City Hall Park and beyond.
